Society challenge we tackle and our approach to solving it:
Despite the importance of marine ecosystems in the fight against climate change, human activities keep endangering their health.
By investing in Sea the Change companies can be an active part of the shift we need to counter the effects of climate change and ensure a healthy and sustainable future for our society.
Through the services offered by Sea the Change it is possible to trigger several benefits both for us and the environment:
- protection and preservation of marine ecosystems;
- reduction of plastic waste at sea;
- offsetting of CO2 emissions;
- support to the establishment of sustainable work activities in the communities involved;
- mitigation of the effects of climate change.
We want to increase positive impact, including sustainability, social impact, inclusion in charity actions and changes of policies with our following activities:
Investing in marine conservation is the most efficient act that our society can make in order to limit climate change, (Deloitte, 2018). We build a startup that offers comprehensive, reliable, traceable, innovative, and coherent KPIs to companies that want to reduce their negative impact on the environment.
The main benefits that we generate with our activities are the following:
Environmental benefits
1) Increase in sea protection projects with relative increase in ecosystem functions (CO2 capture and storage, restocking of fish species, increase in biodiversity, reduction of coastal erosion)
2) Increased awareness in individuals and stakeholders in the tourism sector on the environmental impacts of their activities, on the urgency of fighting climate change and the loss of biodiversity.
3) Reduction of plastic waste in the sea with a reduction in fauna mortality and an increase in the aesthetic value of the regenerated areas
Social benefits
1) Involvement of all stakeholders in the tourism sector in transformation paths of its business model with a view to ecological transition
2) Support to the social partners penalized by the changes necessary to make the economy linked to the sea more sustainable (e.g. fishermen), according to the Just Transition principle.
3) Increased social cohesion and reduced tensions between stakeholders with divergent interests
4) Increase in youth employment rates in the environmental services and sustainability sector.
Economic benefits
1) Creation of private financing mechanisms in sea protection projects
2) Economic support to associations and non-profit organizations with a high generative impact but with scarce economic resources
3) Economic support for the capitalization of the results of projects previously financed by other entities (e.g. regions, EU...)
4) Increase in the economic value generated by the supported ecosystem services (e.g. increase in fish stocks, cost reduction for coastal protection, climate change mitigation...)
Of course our action is a still little drop in the ocean and changes in regulations and policies would be essential to spur effective positive changes.
For instance, in Italy it would be helpful to implement the regulations included in the so-called "Legge Salvamare", which would support the role of fishers in fighting marine litter.
