Our story

FUND 05

We worked in the non-governmental organisations for several years to ensure citizens could dedicate part of their income tax for beneficial public purposes. Based on that, we established Sklad 05 (Fund 05) in 2012 with the consent of the Ministry of Labour, Family and Social Affairs. The goal was to perform activities for the common good following the Law on Foundations. The founder of fund was my company Brez dobička – innovative družbene storitve d.o.o. (Non-Profit – Innovative Social Services Ltd.).

In the following years’ we implemented many impact activities, projects and programs. The majority of them finance social entrepreneurship and social innovation. With many of them, we innovated in Slovenia. Grants within 0,5% income tax program (from where Fund 05 also got the name), first bridge loans in Slovenia for the not-for-profit sector based on agreements with TISE and Slovenian banks, first Social Innovation Awards back in 2012, partnership in organising traditional Social Economy Days, impact investment in several projects and many more.

Till 2022 we gathered more than 2,0 Mio EUR within our programs. More than 300 donors supported our work. We became members of several European Networks (FEBEA, EVPA, Euclid Network, Transnational Giving Europe TGE, Giving Tuesday etc.).

As a Fund 05 president, I was a member of the European Economic and Social Committee in 2005 – 2020, representing the Slovenian civil society sector and social entrepreneurs. I was also leading the advisory board to the PM cabinet on social economy financing in 2018.

Fund 05 was a partner in many international and European Union financed programs bringing social innovation on the Slovenian map. Programs such as PROFIT, SENTINEL, Social Impact Vouchers – SIV and many more strengthened the Slovenian social economy.

Our story

FUND2740

Within the Covid crisis, we become aware that we need more profound societal changes. More than before, the world needs values we nurture: empathy, authenticity, co-operation, innovation, high impact. Moreover, we realised more coherent and structural tools are required to tackle complex society challenges.

In 2021 we co-organised the most prominent international social economy event during the Slovenian EU presidency – conference ActSE 2021. We confirmed the need to build stronger partnerships and bet on quality, knowledge and innovation. After a decade of effort to widen the beneficiaries range government also adopted new legislation, including scaling 0,5% to 1%. Another sign we positively impacted last decade and new challenges are ahead.

Therefore we shifted our focus to achieve high impact. According to the Cambridge dictionary, high-impact means »having a large or powerful effect«. We wanted to deeper understand and develop processes of impact maximisation. Our core intention was to create tool impact design as a methodological process intended to achieve a high effect for different products, services, industries, and policies. We tested our models on impact ventures Wood Belt and Impact Tourism.

Google.org confirmed challenges are the right ones. In December 2021, donating 1 Mio EUR to our foundation was a clear sign we are on the right track. Track to recognise and cope with challenges obstructing fair, digital and green transformation society needs, achieving high impact.

While a climber and mountain runner, I find mountains a source of inspiration and infallible resource for my work, team and foundation work. So it was easy to look around for a new name we were looking at in our renewed path.

Škrlatica, historically also known as Suhi plaz (“Dry Avalanche”), is a mountain in the Slovenian Julian Alps. Its summit at 2,740m above sea level is the second-highest peak in Slovenia (after Triglav at 2,864m). The mountain’s name is the feminine adjectival form of the Slovene word škrlat, a cognate of “scarlet,” referring to the dramatic reddish-purple shade of the steep northwestern rockface in the reddish light of sunset.

Škrlatica is an incarnation of our work. Stunning and dramatic high mountain. While only second-highest in Slovenia many times remains in the shadow, overlooked and neglected. As are challenges in the society we tackle. Climbing its walls is demanding but highly rewarding, as is our impact design work. Looking at Škrlatica in the reddish light of sunset triggers thinking »beyond the horizon« needed for society’s challenges innovative solutions.
